Happy Tuesday!

We hope everyone is doing well! Below is a list of upcoming CrossTown events. We hope to see you there!

September 23 – High School Supper
High schoolers, we hope you can join us tomorrow for High School Supper! We’ll meet at Zaxby’s at 6:30pm. You’re encouraged to bring a friend and $5 to help cover the cost of dinner.

September 27 – CrossTown at BFUMC
Everyone is invited to join us at Brevard First United Methodist Church. We’ll play games, have a lesson, and enjoy tacos together from 5:00–7:00pm.

October 4 – Basecamp
Youth have the option of meeting at St. Philip’s for a traditional CrossTown meeting or at BFUMC for United Methodist Youth Fellowship. Both gatherings will be from 5:00–7:00pm.

October 7 – Middle School After School Club
We hope you can join us on Wednesday, October 7, for after school club at LCGS from 3:30–5:00pm. Snacks and supplies will be provided. By request, this month we’ll be making fall/Halloween themed fuse bead creations. You’re encouraged to invite a friend!

October 9 – Middle School Meetup
All 6th–8th graders are invited to join us on October 9 for dinner at Cookout followed by Capture the Flag! We’ll meet at BFUMC at 6:00pm. and ride the bus to Cookout for dinner. After dinner, we’ll head to Brevard College for capture the flag. Pickup will be at 7:30pm. at BFUMC. Youth who would like to attend the Brevard High School football game are welcome to ride the bus to the high school and sit with us. If your youth plans to join us for the middle school meetup, please sign up here so we can make sure we have enough bus seats available. Please note: If your middle schooler joins us for the football game, pickup will be at BHS.

Permission Forms
Adults, if you have not yet turned in a permission form for this school year, please take a moment to complete the attached form for your youth and return it to us by email or in person on Sunday. If you would prefer to fill out a printed copy, we will have copies available at CrossTown this Sunday. Please note: If your youth plans to join us for an event that requires riding the church bus, a permission form must be on file before they can get on the bus.

Expanding Spiritual Practices in a Prophetic Age

This fall, Coffee & Conversation will explore spiritual practices for living out the Kingdom here and now—especially in a time of upheaval and change. Together, we’ll expand our understanding of practices such as unhurriedness, radical hospitality, downward mobility, and consider how they shape the way we move through the world. Coffee & Conversation meets at 9:15 a.m. in Miller Hall, our large upstairs meeting room.

Walking the Episcopal Way

Where did the Episcopal Church come from, and what do Episcopalians believe? Over four Sundays (September 6-27), “Walking the Episcopal Way” takes up both questions, along with the why behind them.

We’ll follow the church’s story from the first house gatherings in first-century Jerusalem, through the councils that gave us the creeds, the English Reformation and the first Book of Common Prayer, and across the Atlantic to the birth of the Episcopal Church after the American Revolution. From the first chaplain at Jamestown to the church you’ll walk into this Sunday, it’s a longer and more surprising story than most people expect.

We’ll also look closely at our faith itself: how Episcopalians read Scripture, why we worship the way we do, what happens in Baptism and the Holy Eucharist, and the many roles that make up the body of the church, from bishop to laity.

This is a class built for conversation. Bring your questions. If one comes up that stumps us, we’ll track down the answer together. Newcomers curious about this tradition and lifelong Episcopalians who’d like to know it more deeply are equally welcome. Walking the Episcopal Way meets in the YAC, our large downstairs meeting room, at 9:15 a.m.

Our annual St. Francis Blessing of the Animals and Harvest Blessing will take place Sunday, October 4 at 5:00 pm in the parking lot behind the church.

This year marks the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, making our annual celebration of his love for all of God’s creation especially meaningful.

All types of pets are welcome. Please bring them on a leash or in a carrier. If your pet would rather stay home, you are welcome to bring a photo so they can be included in the blessing. A brief service will be offered, and we will give thanks for this year’s harvest at the Rice Street Community Garden. Then, each pet will then be welcomed to receive an individual blessing. And, of course, there will be cake!

We’ll also collect donations for Transylvania County Animal Services. Cash donations, as well as dog and cat food and toys, are welcome. Please make checks payable to Transylvania County Animal Services.

Come celebrate St. Francis, our animal companions, the harvest, and the beautiful world entrusted to our care!

St. Philip’s will open its doors December 3-5 for the annual “No Room at the Inn” exhibit, a display of more than 100 beloved creches collected from around the world on loan from members and friends of the church.

Admission is free, and visitors are invited to wander the aisles of the historic church and experience the beauty and variety of the manger scenes. There will be live music throughout the day, and children can participate in a scavenger hunt as they view the displays.

Founded in 2022, the festival has become a Brevard Christmas tradition, welcoming several hundred visitors each year. Exhibit hours have been expanded in 2026 to allow more people to attend. The doors will be open:

Friday, December 4 – 9:00 am to 7:00 pm

Saturday, December 5 – 9:00 am to 2:00 pm

In 2026, St. Philip’s celebrates the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of our church building.

So far, this celebration has included a 50’s potluck dinner and family game night, an art exhibit, an auction fundraiser benefitting two local camps for children, a special service of Choral Evensong.

In August, we gathered for “Historically Speaking,” a special weekend of learning and prayer with author Craig Gralley and the Reverend Elise Johnstone, exploring the early history of the Episcopal Church in Transylvania County.

Coming soon: A day of history tours to local sites on September 26, and the Bishop’s Celebration, an evening with the Rt. Rev. José McLoughlin on October 17.
